Homelessness
Homelessness
Nearly 600,000 Americans experience homelessness on any given night, an unacceptable reality in one of the world’s wealthiest nations. Unstable housing has grave consequences for physical and mental health, particularly for children. The high number of Americans experiencing chronic homelessness also strains the shelter system, which struggles to provide services for all those in need. Despite steady progress made in reducing homelessness using proven tools like housing vouchers, permanent supportive housing, and rapid rehousing, the depth of the housing crisis resulted in a jump in homelessness in 2017 nationally—the first time since 2010—and has increased every year since.
