Shortage of Affordable Rental Homes
The United States suffers from a severe shortage of affordable rental homes. In 2019, only 60 affordable units were available for every 100 “very low-income” renter households and fewer than 40 were available for every 100 “extremely low-income” households. The shortage of affordable rental homes is a national problem, affecting every state in the country. The lack of affordable options forces families to pay unsustainable rents that can lead to housing instability. Increasing the supply of rental homes affordable to the lowest-income Americans must be a national priority.
