Tristan Stein

Tristan Stein is Associate Director for Higher Education in the Bipartisan Policy Center’s Economic Policy Program. Prior to joining BPC, Stein served as a Project Manager at Californias Little Hoover Commission, an independent, bipartisan state agency charged with making recommendations for the improvement of California state government. In this role, he led research studies in a variety of policy areas, including inclusive regional economic development and workforce development, job training, and reskilling.

Previously, Stein worked at the California Governors Office of Planning and Research (OPR) as a Program Officer and Research Analyst for the California Education Learning Lab, a state grant program focused on encouraging innovation and closing equity gaps in undergraduate education. While at OPR, he also served as principal investigator and researcher for a legislatively-mandated report on the Master Plan for Higher Education in California and state workforce needs.

In addition, Stein worked as a Research Fellow at the California Research Bureau and as a Research Associate at the University of Kent. He holds a PhD from Harvard University in History and received a BA in History and Classics from the University of Southern California.
