Housing By The Numbers

To help inform policymakers, the media, and the public, the Terwilliger Center has compiled a series of charts that provide an up-to-date overview of the state of the U.S. housing market and housing programs. Scroll through the first section to see a breakdown of how many people rent their homes compared to those who own them, as well as information on the household income and wealth of each group. The second section illustrates the demographic breakdown of homeowners and people experiencing homelessness, as well as the number of households receiving federal housing assistance. The third section focuses on housing supply indicators, from the size of the housing supply shortage to data on home starts, home sizes, and available housing inventory. The final section highlights the high cost of housing, including the percentage of households spending more than 50% of their income on housing as well as data on rent, home values, and mortgage rates. Additional information on housing supply trends by state can be found here.
