Expanding Child Care Access with the CHIPS Act

Last year, Congress passed the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act which provides approximately $50 billion to boost America’s competitiveness by increasing the domestic production of microprocessors. Over the next few years, the Department of Commerce will award $39 billion in grants and loans to renovate or construct semiconductor facilities. This will create an estimated 190,000 jobs, and these jobs will require child care for the workers. To help meet this need, the Commerce Department is requiring applicants requesting direct funding over $150 million to submit a plan to provide access to child care.
