A National Artificial Intelligence Strategy is Key to U.S. Leadership in Global Innovation

Washington, DC – The following is a statement by Jason Grumet, founder and president of the Bipartisan Policy Center, on the passage of H.Res.1250 that calls for the creation of a national artificial intelligence strategy to ensure America’s ongoing and future leadership in the field. This bipartisan resolution was cosponsored by Rep. Will Hurd (R-TX), Rep. Robin Kelly (D-Ill), Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA), Rep. Gerald Connolly (D-VA), Rep. Michael Cloud (R-TX), Rep. Frank Lucas (R-OK), Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), and Rep. Marc Veasey (D-TX).

“This resolution is a critical step forward in America’s ability to meet the challenges of the digital age. Artificial intelligence is reshaping the economy, geopolitics, and society, so it’s vital that the United States develop a unified plan that ensures we use this cutting-edge technology to advance inclusion and opportunity.

“BPC is proud to have informed the Artificial Intelligence Initiative over the past year and pleased to see the resolution includes 50 recommendations and 20 principles from our four reports released during this effort that examined the Ethics, Research and Development, National Security, and Workforce issues related to AI.

“A national strategy is imperative to sustaining U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence and ensuring that it strengthens our economy and bolsters national security. We are hopeful this resolution will lead to a coordinated federal approach on the best way to develop and use this evolving technology.”
